The first few weeks in a new country can make even the loveliest apartment feel borrowed. You don’t need to renovate to make it yours. Start with what you can carry, rearrange and take with you again.
Start with a familiar corner
Before you try to style every room, choose one little place that feels like you. A favorite mug on a windowsill, a photograph beside the bed, or a throw you brought from home can make an ordinary moment feel familiar.
Build out from there. When one corner feels settled, the rest of the home starts to feel a little less temporary.
Layer, don’t replace
Rental floors and walls are not always what you would choose. Rugs, curtains, cushions and warm lamps add softness without asking permission from a landlord. Try mixing a few textures instead of matching everything perfectly: linen, cotton, wool and wood work beautifully together.
If you are starting from scratch, look in local secondhand shops first. A small vintage table or a well-loved ceramic bowl can give a room a sense of place.
Make room for both homes
You do not have to choose between your old home and your new one. Put the woven basket from Brazil next to the little lamp you found in Lisbon. Hang a print from your hometown above a chair bought down the street. That mix is your story, and it belongs here.
